Vision and Mission

We provide community members and and low income gardeners with the opportunity to grow food for our local food bank and for themselves while using environmentally sustainable practices. We provide education through demonstrations, short courses, and educational gardens. The Mountain Community Garden is open to all mountain community residents in the surrounding Pierce, Thurston, and Lewis County areas to encourage healthy lifestyles and care for the environment. We provide education on organic growing techniques for our local conditions. We have a compost demonstration area to encourage reduction of solid waste and building healthy soil. We will also provide educational opportunities on topics such as water conservation, composting, seed saving, growing edible plants for our environment, and other related topics.
We are an organic garden where only organic growing techniques are used – no chemical herbicides/pesticides. Gardeners grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers. No invasive species. We have approximately 6300 square feet of garden space dedicated to growing food for the food bank. We also encourage gardeners to “grow a row” for or "share the harvest" with the food bank.
We have a variety of educational gardens including demonstration gardens (herbs, pollinator garden, gardening techniques, native edible plants, etc.
We offer raised bed plots and a common shared area for growing sprawling and tall plants. Plots may be leased seasonally or year-round. Gardeners maintain their own plots and share responsibilities for maintaining the common areas and the Food Bank garden areas.
